Relocation Depression: How to deal with it

Relocating to a new place can be an exciting experience. It can also be a challenging one, especially if you’re leaving behind friends, family, and a community that you’ve grown to know and love. One potential consequence of relocation is what’s known as “relocation depression.” This is a form of depression that can occur when someone is struggling to adjust to their new surroundings and environment.

There are a few key factors that can contribute to relocation depression. One is the sense of loss that can come with leaving behind the familiar. When you move to a new place, you’re leaving behind the people, places, and routines that have become a part of your life. This can be especially hard if you’re moving away from close friends or family members, or if you had a strong sense of belonging in your previous community.

Another factor that can contribute to relocation depression is the stress and uncertainty that often come with making a major change. Moving can be a logistical nightmare, with all of the packing, organizing, and coordinating that needs to be done. It can also be financially stressful, especially if you’re moving to an area with a higher cost of living. And once you arrive at your new location, you may feel overwhelmed by the need to find a place to live, set up utilities, and get your bearings in a completely unfamiliar place.

There are a few things you can do to help mitigate the impact of relocation depression. One is to try to stay connected with the people you’ve left behind. This can be as simple as sending regular emails or texts or using video chat to stay in touch. You might also consider joining a club or organization in your new community, or finding ways to volunteer or get involved in local events. This can help you build a sense of belonging and connection in your new surroundings.

It’s also important to take care of yourself during the relocation process. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, eating well, and getting regular exercise. It can also be helpful to set small, achievable goals for yourself as you adjust to your new environment. This can help you feel a sense of accomplishment and progress as you get settled in.

Finally, don’t be afraid to reach out for help if you’re struggling. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, depressed, or anxious, it’s important to seek support. This could be through talking to a friend or family member, seeing a therapist, or joining a support group. Remember, you’re not alone, and there are people and resources available to help you through this transition.

In conclusion, relocation depression is a common and understandable response to the challenges of moving to a new place. By staying connected with loved ones, taking care of yourself, and seeking out support when needed, you can successfully navigate this transition and find happiness in your new home.

PS: Japa is Nigerian slang. Part of what is now called the Naija urban dictionary. Japa is originally the Yoruba language for flee or run away but has gained usage in Nigeria (Naija) as a word for relocating abroad. e.g; japa from Naija to Canada.

The Best Private Psychiatric and Rehabilitation Centers in Lagos, Nigeria?

The Best Private Psychiatric and Rehabilitation Centers in Lagos, Nigeria?

Lagos, Nigeria is home to some of what we could ordinarily call the best private psychiatric and rehabilitation centers in the country, as these facilities offer high-quality care for individuals suffering from mental health conditions, substance abuse disorders, and other behavioral health issues. However, for ethical reasons, healthcare facilities may not see themselves listed with such adjectives. Besides, what specific parameters will be used to determine the best?

While internet search results show that Nigerians are asking to know the best among various mental health facilities- like in the title of this post, it is a dead-end question, as healthcare facilities are rarely presented thus.

What one can however look out for in psychiatric and rehabilitation facilities, say in Lagos, is the range of mental health services offered. Check if it includes inpatient and outpatient care, medication management, and individual and group therapy. Does it have a dedicated team of experienced psychiatrists, therapists, and support staff who are committed to providing the best possible care to their patients?

Does the private rehabilitation center offer specialized treatment for substance abuse disorders and other addictive behaviors? Check if these centers often use a combination of therapy, medication, and support groups to help individuals overcome their addiction and achieve long-term recovery.

Another common question is the cost of services at private mental healthcare facilities. Let’s take therapy for instance. When it comes to the cost of therapy in Nigeria, private facilities generally offer affordable options, when matched with the premium-quality care they deliver. However, the exact cost will vary depending on the type of treatment and the length of the program.

In conclusion, Lagos is home to some of Nigeria’s leading private psychiatric and rehabilitation centers. These facilities offer high-quality care and support to individuals who are struggling with mental health conditions, substance abuse disorders, and other behavioral health issues. Whether you are looking for inpatient or outpatient care, private facilities in Lagos are great options to consider. But to categorize them into some list that will have the best is something very unlikely to see.

    Mental illness during pregnancy

It is possible for a woman living with mental illness to get pregnant and it is possible for a woman who did not have any mental health challenges to breakdown for one reason or the other during pregnancy. However there is no need to panic because just like any other situation there are treatment and therapy protocols for the mentally ill whether pregnant or not.

So if you or your loved ones find yourselves with this challenge, these are the steps to take:

    1. Seek professional help immediately. Talk to a psychiatrist or ask your gynecologist to recommend one. Do not be tempted to ignore the signs and imagine they will go away after a trimester or after pregnancy.  A mental breakdown is best nipped in the bud like all illnesses; early detection and management can save both mother, baby and loved ones. Please note that the mental illness does not automatically become a threat to the baby except the presentation of the breakdown or illness manifests as the mother wanting to harm her baby within her. However depending on the situation, if not properly managed, one cannot determine how the illness may progress so urgent help from professional experts is critical once the signs are there.
    2. Take the medication prescribed for the mental illness but make sure your gynecologist is aware. It is important to be open and ensure full disclosure with your team of experts at this point so therapies, medications and all other protocols on the journey are collaboratively documented, monitored, tracked and coordinated for your progress. Please note that the use of antipsychotics during pregnancy and breastfeeding is largely safe. Though the data on the safety of the use of antipsychotic drugs in pregnancy and breastfeeding are limited, reports of harm to baby from the use of these drugs are very uncommon. However these reactions to drugs differ from person to person, new medication and treatment protocols emerge everyday due to the evolution and improvements on science so discussing openly with your doctors will even be of more benefit to you and your baby so any abnormalities or challenges can be picked up quickly and corrected if at all and all positive developments can be tracked for your own encouragement, confidence and monitoring of your baby. For example, some antipsychotics drugs  can be sedating therefore when the baby is born, if you have been open and accountable with your records, the medical personnel, midwives or  pediatrician who do a first assessment of your new born baby will proactively  look out for lethargy, sedation and appropriate developmental milestones in your baby and address such quickly if detected so work closely with your doctors and medical team during this period and resist the urge to be secretive.
    3. Take advantage of Psychotherapy sessions. The nine months regular pregnancy journey can be confusing and  complicated with a myriad of physical, emotional and mental changes occuring in the body of a woman. A lot of women seek and find solace and comfort with a support group at this time either online with platforms such as Baby Center or offline with their extended families, religious groups, community groups, office groups or some other social group. Now a pregnant woman coping with mental illness or a mental breakdown at the same time might experience even more changes and confusing experiences both for her and the people around her. So she might benefit from psychotherapy and counselling sessions for even her partner and her larger family as a group if so required so they can understand, support and help her better through the journey which might be very stressful without being armed with the right understanding and coping techniques to manage the situation.
    4. Be positive minded and refuse the urge to panic over the baby. Many pregnant women have combated various illnesses such as Diabetes, Hypertension and others alongside pregnancy with mother and  child coming through safe and healthy. With proper and timely professional intervention and management, mother and child will be just fine. Mental illness is not a death sentence, neither is it the end of a normal life. It is a breakdown of the mind just as physical illnesses are a breakdown of various parts of the body. There is help and resolution though in some cases it could become chronic and medication might be required for life just like some cases of diabetes and hypertension which in some cases go away after the mother has been delivered of her baby.

At ‘The Gracehill Hospital’ we have managed several cases of  pregnant and breastfeeding mothers going through a breakdown and we can confidently tell you they get better and go on to lead normal lives with their partners and their babies so we are sure you will be just fine if you seek help especially on time.
